What is happening in America?
Recently, I have seen some amazingly hateful things posted on Facebook on both sides (though more from the extreme right) about the upcoming 2012 election in the US. I always try to say things that are positive, as I think it's a better way of looking at politics than always focusing on the negative.
So I created and posted this image:
I expected some people to say that they didn't like Obama, or that they like Romney, or whatever. People are entitled to their opinions. Here are the comments as of this writing, with names changed to protect... well, just because it's not really about who said what, but because of a certain type of attitude that I think is dangerous to America.
Alice: Yayyyy! Go Almo
Bob: I won't be, because he's an awful president.
Charlie: Wait....don't you live in Canada?
Me: I do live in Canada, but I still care about what goes on in the US, and I still vote.
Charlie: So...u want to have a say in American politics but they don't effect you. Right?
Me: I am so shocked you would question the right of a citizen to vote, that I don't even know what to say.
There must be a McCarthy somewhere who is preparing to take advantage of the situation brewing in the US. I ask my fellow citizens not to give in to fear. I'm not going to question peoples' right to vote for whom they want. But I hope they will make that decision based upon for whom they are voting, not against whom they are voting.
I recognize that the de facto two-party system in the US can make this difficult. But in this election more than any I have lived through, I find that the candidates are making too much of what to be afraid of from the other guy.
